If we try to control our emotions, we may find that they intensify and take us on a merry-go-round of fear and confusion.
In sitting meditation we can learn to work with our emotions, feeling their textures underneath the mind-made dramas that often accompany them. Relating with our emotions in this way allows us to free their energy.
We can experience the energy of our emotions without believing the stories we tell ourselves about them. We can let our emotions come and go without being at their mercy. We can discover in this liberated energy our fundamental energy tender, alive and strong.
Emotions tell us ‘how it feels’ to come to contact with something. Communication in form of emotions is very direct. Maybe because of this directness emotions are often objectified, or disguised by our ideas and prejudices.
Instead of allowing emotions to be bearers of messages about us in the world, we avoid them because we fear uncertainty and painful situation. We strengthen our separation from the environment and cut ourselves off from experiencing fully.
However, emotions connect us with reality as direct experience. This allows us to open up the emotional qualities of experience making us more present and alive.
